Go Ahead London - Turbo Reverse Engineer

Cost-effective Solutions

brief

Go-Ahead London, one of the largest bus operators in the UK, faced a significant issue with their bus fleet: the parts needed to repair the Holset HE200VG turbos were no longer being sold, forcing them to consider purchasing entire turbo units. This would be a far more expensive solution.

We partnered with Go-Ahead London to provide an innovative and cost-effective solution through reverse engineering.

Reverse Engineering

With a large fleet to maintain, this issue had the potential to lead to significant financial strain. They needed a way to extend the life of their current turbos by repairing them with high-quality parts rather than replacing them completely.

We proposed a solution that would save Go-Ahead London from purchasing entire turbo units. Our team used reverse engineering to recreate the unavailable parts by:

  • 3D scanning the existing parts to generate accurate CAD models.

  • Identifying material specifications for each component to ensure that the replacement parts would meet the original performance and durability standards.

  • Outputting engineering drawings that could be used for sourcing and manufacturing the new parts.

Engineering Design

With the CAD data and detailed material specs, we helped Go-Ahead London develop a working prototype for testing in their fleet. This prototype enabled them to test the functionality of the repaired turbo units without needing to replace them entirely.

This solution not only significantly reduced their operational costs but also provided a sustainable option for maintaining their bus fleet, allowing them to repair and extend the life of their current turbo systems.

Go-Ahead London has been able to test these re-engineered parts in their fleet, confirming that the solution works effectively. The success of this project highlights our engineering team’s ability to solve complex product issues and deliver tangible results for our clients.
